Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., Claypool, Arizona

In January Western completed an extensive copper smelter/ISA melt rebuild in Claypool Arizona for the world’s largest publicly traded copper and gold producing company, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. The existing smelter sprung arch roof was in need of total tear out and repair, along with a complete refractory relining of the ISA Vessel. The 130 man crew worked around the clock for nearly 4 full weeks to complete the 47,000 man hour project.  Despite a large amount of unforeseen steel repairs and refractory material short falls the project was completed within 1 day of the original schedule. The furnace rebuild showcased the ability of our extremely talented and dedicated welders, brick masons, and laborers who really are the backbone of Western Refractory. A huge debt of gratitude goes out to all those who made this an extremely safe and successful project.
